Parent and community engagement and involvement in education ... we want more of it, but how? In Ontario, the recent establishment of a Parent Involvement Policy elevates
the priority and provides funding to school boards and school councils for
engaging parents in the education of our children.
This centre provides strategies, ideas and resources to engage and involved parents in education in helpful ways. View a webcast, search through the strategies and ideas, or click on the buttons above for a perspective on how teachers, principals, boards and school councils all have different roles - and on how parents have a role as partners.
A number of New Parent Resources from the Ministry and the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat are now available online and in print to assist parents and educators reach every student. Across Ontario, there are now hundreds of examples of programs underway to reach out to further engage parents in education. Read about some Success Stories from last year, watch for more, and find out what other schools in your area have been doing to engage parents. Read about how the journey to Ontario's new policy on Parent Involvement represents One Giant Leap Forward. It takes planning, effort, collaboration within a board or within a school and perhaps with a school council along with deliberate interventions to stimulate parents to become involved in helpful ways. Hoping and wishing for helpful parental involvement is not a strategy.
