Brief Biography of Gord Kerr

Gord Kerr completed a Master of Education at Nipissing University where his studies focused on methods for advancing helpful parent and community involvement in education in Ontario.  He is also a graduate of the Queen's University School of Business, and holds an Honours Bachelor of Commerce.  Gord is married, the father of two boys, a long time school council member and chair, and a regular contributor to the School Advocate, a newspaper distributed to all schools in Ontario.

As the elected trustee for Aurora and King Township since 2006, Gord has served on a wide variety of board committees and specially struck committees, including the Accommodation Review Committee for Wells Street Public School and the Director of Education Search Committee (2009).  He continues to serve as Vice-Chair of the York Region District School Board's Parent, Family and Community Engagement Advisory Committee and Chair of the Special Education Advisory Committee.

Prior to election as a trustee in 2006, Gord served on various board level committees, groups and task forces with the York Region District School Board.  He was a regular workshop leader and presenter for principals, vice-principals, teachers and parents in York Region, Peel, and Halton and continues to lead a module of the Principal's Qualifications Course at Nipissing University on parental involvement and leading school councils for success.  In November 2005 he presented original Canadian research on school councils and parent engagement to an enthusiastic audience at The Quest for Communities that Work in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

Gord was appointed to the Parent Voice in Education Project in 2004 by former Minister of Education Gerard Kennedy as one of 20 parents from across Ontario consulting with parents and advising the Minister on methods for advancing parent and community involvement in Ontario.  This group's final report led to the development of a new policy on Parent Involvement for Ontario.  He served as a member of Ontario's Interim Parent Involvement Advisory Board providing advice to the new Minister of Education until October 2006.  The Parent Voice in Education report served as one of the key inputs to the recently updated Ontario policy on Parent Engagement issued by the Minister in September 2010.

In 2009, Gord was honoured by Nipissing University with the Alumni Achievement Award for service to public education in Ontario.

Gord Kerr is seeking re-election to continue serving as the trustee for the York Region District School Board, representing the areas of Aurora and King Township.
