In the York Region District School Board, we are fortunate to have in place the strong leadership, dedicated teachers, planners, administrators, support staff and countless volunteers to guide and support our students. And beyond that, we have an enviable track record of student success that benefits our student every day. Over the past 15 years, I have had the opportunity to work on a number of school level, board level and provincial level projects dedicated to strengthening Ontario's public education system. Four years ago, you honoured me with your support in the 2006 Municipal and School Board elections and elected me as your public school trustee. I committed myself to playing a role in sustaining the strong public education system that we have in place in York Region and invited you to join with me in celebrating the many dedicated people and programs developed to help our students succeed. At that time, I pledged that I would continue to learn more about the specific challenges facing every Trustee in order to become increasingly effective in representing your interests, and the interests of all of our students and families across York Region. I also pledged to work collaboratively with other Trustees and staff to resolve issues constructively within our community. In these past 4 years, we have seen public education continue to evolve. We have seen new schools opened, the election of a new board chair and the selection of a visionary and dedicated new Director of Education, Ken Thurston. Nothing excites me more about the next four years more than hearing our new Director speak about his vision for the future of this board and the role that we will all play, students, parents, teachers, administrators, board staff and trustees, in bringing his new vision to life, "putting the 'public' back in public education". The work is already underway, and I am fully committed to supporting him in his efforts to bring about positive change across this board. Again, I ask for your support in the October 25th municipal and school board elections but above all, I ask for your continued support for all of the people working in our system every day - people dedicated to helping our children succeed. Thank you,
