"How can I help my child do better in school this
year"
This is the question that the vast majority of parents ask
every year - and whether they ask directly or not, most parents are
looking for guidance from you – their child’s teacher.
Here are a few of the key ways that you can engage your
students’ parents:
 |
Open up a channel of communication between yourself and
the parents of students in your class. Invite your parents to partner with
you and let them know how you prefer to be contacted (eg. Through a note, a
phone call, a journal entry, by email or through a visit) |
 |
If you know that you are dealing with different
languages and cultures in your students’ homes, see if you can get the help
of a multilingual parent to help you translate and convey key messages to
these homes. |
 |
Let parents know about key events happening at the
school that they should attend – concerts, assemblies, sporting events,
parent-teacher interviews. |
 |
Help parents understand your expectations for homework
completion (eg. What the assignments are, when they are due, a few tips for
parents, what to do if the child or the parent doesn’t understand the
assignment, or cannot complete it on time) |
 | Encourage
volunteerism by letting people know about the various opportunities that may
be available – class trips, small groups, specific events. There may only
be a few who can volunteer due to other responsibilities, but keep asking.
